HSBC To fund sixth form bursaries

Two new bursaries are to be offered for Sixth Form students at Bolton School: one for the Girls' Division and one for the Boys' Division.  The bursaries will be awarded to students from modest backgrounds that have a good academic track record, have been predicted high grades in their GCSEs and are entering Bolton School from the state system.  The money will be provided by the HSBC Global Education Trust.  Dame Mary Richardson, Chief Executive of the Trust, visited the School in September 2007 and found the School fulfilled the criteria of being able to offer a top-class Sixth Form education.  The bursaries will cover 100% of tuition fees and funding will also be available for equipment and travel costs.

Simon Marsden, Clerk & Treasurer at the School, said: "The School is absolutely delighted.  These bursaries will help us to fulfil our mission of realising the full potential of each student, irrespective of means and background.  This builds upon a recent award by the Leverhulme Trust and further bolsters our bursary provision.”

The School also offer bursaries to Sixth Formers through a number of other trusts, one of which is the Ogden Trust Science Scholarships.  These awards can be for 100% of the fees and are aimed at able students that have previously been in the state sector and are looking to study Science at an independent school.
