Cricket vs. SEDBERGH SCHOOL - Week beginning 15 June 2009
Some matches were close but, for the second year running, Bolton lose all five to the Cumbrians.
1st. xi. lost by 5 wickets
Bolton 152 all out Thompson 69
Sedbergh 153 - 5
In so many ways, this was a different world for the firsts. Sedbergh being boarders had, in the past fortnight, been practising and playing far more than we probably ever would. We had had 4 empty Saturdays and the 20/20 final rained off. Despite our improvements, the Sedbergh square had more pace and bounce than most of our team had ever experienced. Henry Thompson's class shone through with a fine 69, but no one else scored significantly. Our lunch score of 80-3 was just acceptable if we built on it but though we reached three figures easily a later order collapse saw us 20 to 30 short - we were simply not able to deal with the pace of well directed short bowling.
2nd. xi. lost by 148 runs in 35/35 format
Sedbergh 221 – 8
Bolton 73 all out
The amiable annihilation achieved on sunny Bottom level – same opening sentence as Arnold but this time it"s the home boys who were the ovine slaughtered ones. Sheen shocked by not taking a wicket; Philips was the only bowler to come out with colours even at half mast – he had both openers with the score at 22-2. This only brought Dutton to the wicket who scored the first century of the season here – tho' dropped twice, his was a brutal innings and the home boys looked totally lost with placings and performance in the field going from bad to worse. 6.3 was always going to be tough to sustain, but in Yates and Halton we had players with the track record – they and Warburton were back in the hutch at 23-3. Nat Hough battled not unamusingly for 30+ the opposition had variety and confidence and Bolton fell away to reduce their seasonal success rate to what is for a talented team a dismaying 50%
U15 xi. lost by 74 runs in 35/35 format
Sedbergh 173 -7
Bolton 99 all out
Again missing Hunter and Polding, the colts battled bravely but forlornly and lost to the best visiting side of the season so far –possibly at all levels. The first ten overs from the ever tidy patel and ever quicker Aslam went for just 22 – and 2 wickets down – 60 runs were smashed off the next ten and the run a ball rate continued all the way to the end of the 35. The required rate was possible on a good wicket and a lightening outfield (for two football pitches!) – but only if the trio of our three best bats all scored well. Sanders" cameo 21 included a super straight six but he was outwitted by the well captained visitors field placing. Aslam & Berry enjoyed themselves with the bat but the varied attack, which cleverly started with quick left arm over & slow left arm spin was all too much and 99 all out was a more than fair representation of the chasm of class between the sides.
U14 xi. lost by 13 runs
Sedbergh 100 all out
Bolton 87 all out Sam Towers 42
Bolton took early wickets making use of the bowler friendly conditions. Batting was never easy but with a couple of strong batsmen, Sedbergh just reached three figures not quite using their allotted 30 overs. A big and fast opening attack (one of each) made early inroads. Sam Towers batted better than anyone all day but none of the Bolton boys could stay with him long enough - all it needed in a low scoring game.
U13 xi. lost by 22 runs in 30/30 format
Sedbergh u14 B 177 all out Jenkins 3 - 34
Bolton 155 – 8
Playing against boys a year older, the u13s put up a brave show but fell significantly short despite scoring well. The experience or strength of the opponents proved just too much. Good performances with the ball saw us reduce the Sedbergh team to 120 – 9. Unfortunately a regular u14 batsman had been dropped and took command at the end to put on 50 for the last wicket. Nearly a run a ball is a tough target at any age but the young Bolton side opened well reaching 90 for the loss of two wickets – a mini-collapse made winning almost impossible and so it proved despite a useful late partnership by Eliot McIntyre and Sam Bevan, who each score twenties.
Cricket vs Stockport Grammar School - 09 May 2009
The toughest opposition to date - but we came out overall winners - 3 wins, 2 abandoned draws and 2 defeats.
1st XI won by 36 runs in rain affected match
Bolton 183 - 3 in 40; Henry Thompson 72*
Stockport 109-8 in 31; Andrew Mills 3-7
Like the weather, this performance was a touch soggy in parts but the overall impression is of a glorious day. Coach and administrator small talk, at first man out Jack Bentham's demise, of a target of 180-3 an over for first ten, 4 for next, then 5, then 6 - proved almost exactly right in outcome but not in the means. Henry Thompson carried his bat for 72 - anothe classic Thompsonian innings driving delightfully, accelerating later. Just one possible lesson for Henry and all is the need, with a little more awareness, especially with such damp outfields, to take every available run especially turning ones into twos. This looked particularly worrying when the scoring rate fell below coach's hopes. Indeed, we were only 51-1 at the half way stage. Cometh the hour, cometh the man - well hardly an hour - Andrew Mills smote 3 soaring straight sixes and HT soon joined in. From 88-2 after 30 overs, 95 came off the last ten including, for amusement's sake, one maiden! So it was with some confidence the seam-strong side took tea. The rain dampened much but not their enthusiasm, where Mills' allround skills were now seen to include prowess with the whale. Set 142 in 31 after the rain gave way to a delightful late afternoon, Stockport started slowly unable to throw off the shackles of Watkinson & McIntyre. Bowling at away match length, i.e. too short for bottom level, the blond backup attack of Birchall & Makinson briefly gave the opposition some hope, but it was no shock that it was Mills who took bowling honours, too. Shorter, straighter and skiddier, Andrew crowned his MoM (Man of the Mop) performance with figures of 5-2-7-3. In so many ways, this was the epitome of how to play a full game of this style of cricket.
2nd XI won by 8 wickets
Stockport 66 all out; Jordan Lambert 3-8
Bolton 67-2
No transport of delight for the seconds in one of the most imbalanced and irrelevant matches of recent times - they took on the eight of Stockport. Possibly out of kindness, wicket machine Sheen failed to take even one but Lambert reminded us of his all-rounder status by nabbing three. Warburton and Yates scored freely stopping solely for tea and the meeting (for contest could it not be called) was over very early. One crumb of comfort is that Stockport's member of staff has gracefully offered a letter of apology and their Headmaster is taking action.
U15 XI abandoned as a draw
Stockport 151-5 in 30 overs
After two early successes, and a customary tight start, the U15s came up against their most difficult opponents to date. A delightful partnership burgeoned, putting on 111 for the third wicket and the 5 an over score would have proved quite an obstacle for the unbeaten colts. Possibly to their relief, they never made it to the crease as rain intervened.
U14 XI won by 44 runs 30/30 format
Bolton 143-5; Callum Kay 63;Sam Towers 40
Stockport 99 all out; Christian Towers 3-6
Led by our two county players, the U14s produced a highly efficient display to prevail over the Stopfordian offerings. With run machine McCann ill, Towers stepped up and took apart the attack with his captain, who is averaging over 50 for the season to date. Sam then confirmed why he is the county spinner with a spell to rip out any Stockport resistance. A most satisfying trip!
U13 XI abandoned as a draw 25/25 format
Stockport 90-4
Bolton 34-2
The weather was the winner when a torrential shower finished the match which was poised at the interesting stage of our having 8 wickets in hand to chase another 57 off 11 overs. Our choice of early bowlers again did little to trouble the opposition, but Dack, O'Gara and Burrows bowled well or effectively later on, backed up by impressively aggressive keeping from James Barker and SGS were kept below 4 an over. Both openers failed but we were building soundly when the rains came to further dampen the U13s disappointing start to the season.
U12 XI A team lost by 1 wicket in 25/25 format
B Team lost by 40 runs in 25/25 format
Bolton A 115-5
Stockport A 116-9
Stockport B 118 all out, Mehal Malhotra 3-0, Shaoib Khan 3-12
Bolton B 78 all out
The cricketing worlds of our youngest squad members came crashing down to earth with the first two defeats of the season. The B team on debut were well behind the opposition, with by far the highest score being the extras we gave away. Whilst Khan, early on, and Melhotra, in amongst the tail, produced notable figures, the byes, wides and no balls we send down lost us the game and exposed massive inexperience. We will need to practise accuracy as much as possible and learn to concentrat for the full hour and a half if victories are to be had in later fixtures.
The A team's defeat was of the most galling sort for it was the stuff of journos' delight - a last ball result with all options open. This team should however never have been in this position. The star of the match was the Stockport opener, Wolstenholme (66*), variously described as awesome, amazing and very good - but the use of nine bowlers with some first rankers going for nine an over must go part way to explaining our defeat. Four overthrows nearing the conclusion shows the inexperience/panic that we will need to get rid of to become a really good side. The 115 total was not a bad effort having been shorn of Callum Parkinson early, LBW for 1, with five batsmen reaching double figures. None passed 30 however and one really big score is so often needed to secure victory against the strong opposition the likes of Stockport always provide. A big learning day for the two babes' teams.
Cricket - Lancashire Schools' 20/20 Competition
On a moist May morning, the school's 20/20 squad travelled North West to take on King Edward VII, Lytham, Queen Elizabeth's Grammar, Blackburn and Lancaster Royal Grammar in the first round of this event, now in its third year. Victory here would see us join the other area winners later in the season. The North West winners would then challenge their counterparts from the North East in September.
The draw pitted us against old rivals Lancaster. No lights or music but coloured clothing and our gold and black boys were soon buzzing. Henry Thompson's seasonal debut was a beautifully crafted 52 in 57 balls. His half century partnership with the in form Jack Bentham helped us to 112-8 - which, after a slow start (only 39-3 after 10 overs) was a useful but not obviously match winning target to set the Red Roses. When Lancaster's halfway score was 55-3, we worried but wobbles were soon dispelled with a devastating spell of 4-8 by Matt Birchall. 89 all out meant we had won comfortably by 23 and went on to meet QEGS in the final.
Regular foes in football and swimming, it was well over a decade since we had played any regular cricket against the Blackburnians. Their solid start saw them slowly progress to 46-2 - this should have been a launchpad for a run a ball total, but there's a huge range of options for captain Watkinson. His tyro pairing of, not unexpectedly, Giles Makinson with 4-13 and astonishingly, Henry Thompson (2-6) plus two run outs meant QEGS stuttered to 90-8. We went in with real hopes of success. The going was slow however after Thompson had fallen early to Matt Birchall's brother, Birchall and we only edged ahead of their scoring rate in the 14th over. 75-3 with 18 balls remaining to score 16 saw the scales pretty well balanced. 84-7 two overs later saw them well and truly tipped away. However,we had Jordon Lambert, fresh from his sensational 70 for the seconds and Giles Makinson, who didn't want to see his efforts with ball go to waste, at the crease. 1,1,2,2,1 went the scores and this was finishing a 20/20 straight from the coaching DVD (hardly likely to be a manual in these new fangled formats) - victory with a ball to spare by three wickets. We move on to Stockport, Merchant Taylors' and the Cumbrian winners with bated breath, knowing everyone had contributed to the day's success - and the scent of victory should be in our nostrils, too, if we've learnt from our occcasional wayward moments in this intensest of cricket contests.
