It was a magical night! Sir Ian McKellen, an ex-pupil of Bolton School, was in attendance as the patron of our first Bursary Ball. The theme for the night was A Midsummer Night's Dream and the purpose of the event was to raise money in order to give gifted children from less wealthy backgrounds a chance to attend Bolton School.
Sir Ian commented "I feel lucky to have been able to attend this school. I, like other people I knew, was a scholarship student here. The money raised at the Ball will change the lives of some bright children who deserve to have their sights raised and horizons broadened.”
Pamela Taylor, Development Director at the School, said: “Our Open Door Bursary Fund maintains the ethos of Lord Leverhulme, who re-endowed the School in 1913 on the premise that it should provide an education for all, irrespective of financial circumstances.”
The glittering event was held in the Great Hall which had been transformed into the Fairy Kingdom - over 300 guests enjoyed a four course meal, while pupils acted out scenes from Shakespeare's play.
The money raised from the evening will fund five new seven year bursaries. There are currently over 260 students at Bolton School who receive assisted bursary places. For more information about bursaries, please click here.
