a sensational summer concert

The Boys' and Girls' Divisions of Bolton School joined together to perform a sensational summer concert at the Victoria Hall in Bolton.  A packed audience witnessed a three hour musical extravaganza which was a celebration of the musical talent of pupils from Year 7 through to the Upper Sixth Form.

The evening offered a wide ranging musical programme - with renditions of everything from Tchaikovsky to Queen to pieces written by students themselves. There were performances by the School’s Joint Concert Band, the Joint Chamber Choir, the Senior and Advanced Guitar Groups, the Joint Percussion Ensemble, the Joint Orchestra, the Girls’ Middle School Choir and the Joint Jazz Band.

The evening’s finale was an uplifting medley of "Songs from the Shows” from the entire Year 7 (girls and boys), accompanied by solo spots from some of the School’s talented Sixth Formers.  Audience involvement was encouraged and there were some rousing choruses and interesting dance sequences during “You’re The One That I Want”.

Steve Martin, Director of Music in the Boys’ Division said: “It’s been a fantastic night.  You do sometimes question yourself as you deal with all the logistics of rehearsals, especially with Years 11, 12 and 13 being away on study leave.  However, on the night, when you see such wonderful performances, you know why you do what you do.  Over 500 pupils have been involved in tonight’s performance – they’ve worked extremely hard and deserve their success on the night.  I’d also like to pay tribute to all the music teachers that have been involved – across both divisions this amounts to more than 40 staff.”

Girls’ Division’s Director of Music, Alistair MacKenzie, commented: “one of the real pleasures of my job is working on productions like this; there is much productive and creative collaboration between the two divisions over the course of the year but it is only once every two years that we put on a musical evening of this magnitude outside the School.  On a night like this, you realise the range and depth of talent across both divisions is staggering.  Roll on the next Joint Summer Concert in 2009 at the Bridgewater Hall!”
