a record Breaking year

Girls' Division: 87% of Entries Graded A or B and 97.4% of Entries Graded A, B or C

Bolton School Girls' Division has recorded its best ever A Level results.  In a year which saw a 100 percent pass rate, 87 percent of all entries were graded A or B and a staggering 97.4 percent were graded A, B or C: there were no E grades.  Thirty four girls out of 104 got 3, 4 or 5 A grades and 61.3 percent of entries were graded as As.

There were many notable personal achievements, none more so than Sapphira Kaushal.  Sapphira celebrated achieving 4 A grades in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and English Literature despite only entering the UK from India in January 2006 when she joined the Lower Sixth.  She quickly caught up and took her AS levels in June with her peers.  Her 4 As will allow her to study Medicine after a gap year.

Headmistress, Mrs Gill Richards, commented: "Both the students and staff are very happy in what is a record breaking year.  One girl, Lynne Sellers achieved 5 A grades and I was delighted that the entire team of Head Girls - Jenny Davies, Rose Robson, Natalie Caldwell and Natalie Rout – all got A grades.”

Boys' Division: 100% Pass Rate

It has also been another record year for A Level results in the Boys' Division.  For the first time, every candidate passed in every subject, to give a 100 percent pass rate at an average of 4.1 passes per candidate.

Over half of passes (56 per cent) were at grade A and 93 percent were at grade C or better.  No less than 43 candidates achieved 3 grade As or better.  In 8 subjects, every pass was at A or B.

Two students achieved 5 grade As.  Amarnath Marthi, who also gained a Gold CREST award for his research into decay of white blood cells in synovial fluid, will go to St John’s College, Cambridge to study medicine.  Suneet Patel, a volunteer worker at the Lads’ and Girls’ Club, will go on to study medicinal chemistry at Manchester University.

Two other students achieved marks which placed them in the top 5 in the country: Ben Vickers in Electronics and Zainul Patel in Product Design.

“The results came as a pleasant surprise and it is nice to achieve another record.  The students and staff have clearly worked very hard over the year to improve on their AS scores.  The A2 results are well above expectation, so there should be a lot of smiling faces today,” said Headmaster, Mr Mervyn Brooker.
