How is Latin studied up to GCSE level?
All boys take a course in Latin in their first two years. The emphasis is on a lively and meaningful introduction to the subject. The Cambridge Latin course books and e-learning resource are used alongside the department's own booklet; in addition to the rudiments of Latin grammar, pupils study the influence of Latin on modern languages and key aspects of Roman society. Pupils study either Latin or Classical Civilisation in Year 9. The GCSE Latin course, covered in Years 10 and 11, focuses on the analysis of ancient literature and culture, as well as language skills.
And at Advanced Level
Latin is a dynamic part of Sixth Form curriculum at Bolton School, and there is a strong sense of identity among all of the school's A Level classicists. The A Level Latin course sharpens linguistic skills and encourages a thorough and personal response to key Latin texts. As with all three classical subjects, Latin is offered in conjunction with the Girls' Division Classics Department, meaning that pupils are taught in mixed classes.
