Mr Philip Britton has been appointed as the new Headmaster of Bolton School Boys' Division. Mr Britton will take up his position from September 2008, when he replaces Mr Mervyn Brooker at the helm of one of the most successful independent schools in the country.
Mr Britton, aged 38, is currently Deputy Head of The Grammar School at Leeds, where, since joining the school straight after university, he has enjoyed an accelerated career path; he became Head of Physics at the age of 23 and has been Deputy Head for the past five years.
Philip Britton is married to Rachel and has two sons, Thomas and Laurence. He graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Physics from St Hugh's College, Oxford where he was a Nuffield Exhibitioner. He won the Charles Fox Prize for best performance in his PGCE at Cambridge University. In 1998 he completed a Masters in Education (with distinction) from the University of Leeds. He has also spent time seconded to the Institute of Physics and, last year, was presented with an international award for his contributions to Physics Education.
He thoroughly enjoys the outdoor life, which he pursues through his involvement in the scouting movement; he also manages to play the clarinet and sing bass in a local choir.
Mr Britton said "Bolton School is a very special place, committed to open access, renowned for producing high quality academic results and, importantly for me, capable of adding that extra dimension through its wide range of extra-curricular activities".
