Henry Collier represented his country at the Nobel Festivities in Stockholm

Science student attends nobel festivities and an audience with royalty

Ex-Bolton School pupil Henry Collier enjoyed an audience with HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.  He was in Stockholm along with 24 other young scientists as they attended the Stockholm International Youth Science Seminar, a week-long seminar for young scientists from around the world, arranged in conjunction with the Nobel Festivities.  Henry said, "it was surprisingly casual, she'd sent word not to use her title as an address and just to talk normally.”  After this, the group of young scientists enjoyed an evening in the best nightclub in Stockholm.

The 24 scientists from around the globe were in Stockholm due to their outstanding research work in the field of science.  During the week, one day was given over to seminars - 23 presentations ranging from rocket fuels to cancer, ecology to architecture.  Henry presented for 8 minutes about Shaken Baby Syndrome. His research work had been undertaken whilst at Bolton School after he had become involved with the Nuffield Foundation Bursary Scheme.  The scheme funds students in undertaking real, novel and innovative research.  His research was undertaken at the University of Manchester over 4 weeks during the summer of 2005.  He received a prestigious CREST Gold Award for his work and was awarded the QinetiQ SIYSS Prize at the National BA Science Fair in February 2006.  He was the UK's sole representative in Stockholm.

During the week in Stockholm, besides his audience with royalty, Henry spent a day at the Nobel Lectures in Physics and Chemistry held at Stockholm University, a day at the Karolinska Institute with the Nobel Secretary and other eminent scientists, as well as being given a tour of the city and the Nobel Museum,  He also spent an evening at the Nobel Reception, which included a cocktail party with the Laureates and members of the Nobel Foundation.

Henry, who is now studying Medicine at UCL, commented, “In one sentence, it was amazing.  This was a once in a lifetime chance, which I will never forget.”

Henry's full report on the week's seminar can be downloaded below.
