Forty two teams from 16 different primary schools took part in Bolton School's Crusader Cup. The annual event is organised by the School's Soccer Coach, Keith Branagan, who made 263 appearances in goal for Bolton Wanderers in the 1990s.
Schools from Bolton and from as far away as Preston, Wigan and Leigh, entered teams that took part in three separate competitions: an A League, a B League and a Girls’ League. They were cheered on by parents and Bolton Wanderers’ mascot, Lofty the Lion!
Teams initially played in mini-leagues before winning their way through to the knockout stages. In a close fought final in the A Competition, Lostock Primary ran out 2-1 winners against St Thomas of Canterbury. The B Competition was won by Brownlow Fold who beat Lostock Primary in the final. The girls’ competition saw Eagley overcome Cherry Tree in the final.
Keith Branagan said: "It is always a pleasure to organise this event, especially when you see the joy on the kids’ faces. This year the competition has virtually tripled in size. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to the Year 11, 12 and 13 football teams who have helped run this event - without them it would not happen.”
