Ali Altaf and Amarnath Marthi, two Sixth Form students, have received prestigious CREST Gold Awards from the British Association for the Advancement of Science. Funded by the Nuffield Foundation Bursary Scheme, the two students undertook individual project work over 4-5 weeks at the University of Manchester. Working with professors, Amarnath focused on the molecular biology of the decay of synovial fluid and Ali concentrated on the molecular biology of the protein fibrillin. They presented the findings of their research at a special regional science day held at the University of Manchester, which involved students from all over the North West. Ali and Amarnath presented in front of a judging panel made up of representatives from the British Association, Manchester SETPOINT and other science institutions. Following their evaluation, each student was presented with a CREST Gold Award.
For many years now, the Biology Department in the Boys' Division has encouraged Sixth Form students that show a real flair for the biological sciences to become involved in the Nuffield Foundation Bursary Scheme which funds motivated students to carry out real, novel and innovative research within a leading biomedical research laboratory using state of the art equipment, during their summer vacation.
