Bolton School Boys' Division has been described as "a remarkable school with many notable features” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The report found that the school had undergone considerable improvements since the last inspection in 2000.
There was praise for providing “a high quality and extensive education”. The report found that the high expectations of teachers brought the best out of pupils and that students at GCSE and A level were performing above the national average for maintained selective schools.
Mr Mervyn Brooker, the Headmaster, commented: “This is a superb report. Our parents tell us what a good school this is, but to be called “remarkable” is very pleasing. It recognises the fact that education at Bolton School is not just about examination results and that we are constantly striving to improve.”
The report found the quality of pastoral care at the School to be outstanding, with each pupil being known and very well cared for. The report also found that “the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils is outstanding in all parts of the school.” The report went onto acclaim how well pupils related to one another both in and out of the classroom. Parents were also found to be highly appreciative of the good links that they have with the school.
The report identified a need for a more systematic approach to the monitoring of the quality of subject and departmental management and it commended the School on its ongoing curriculum review.
Overall, this excellent inspection praised the School for achieving its aims and serving well both pupils and parents. “It fulfils its aim to provide a curriculum that challenges and encourages initiative, develops leadership potential, and enables a boy to grow into a self-confident young man.”
