old boy aims to become the apprentice

Old Boy, Alex Wotherspoon aged 24, is aiming to become Sir Alan Sugar's Apprentice.  Alex was one of 20,000 people who put forward their CVs and through a series of gruelling pre-show rounds has made it into the final, which is made up of eight men and eight women.  The Apprentice will command a six figure salary but as Sir Alan himself says it's not about the money it is about the privilege of working for him!

Episode One saw Alex step forward and lead his all-male team in their efforts to make a profit from selling seafood.  The girls’ team won and Alex and two of his colleagues found themselves in front of Sir Alan.  In a spirited defence of his tactics, he managed to avoid the dreaded words of "You’re Fired!” and will progress to next week’s round which sees the contestants attempt to run their own laundry businesses.

Alex showed a talent for business in the Sixth Form at Bolton School before he went off to study Managerial Administrative Studies at Aston Business School.  One of Alex’s old teachers commented: “Alex was a confident and outgoing student who, through his A Level choices of Business Studies and Economics, showed he had a real flair for business.”

Alex started out in business selling manure.  His intention was to raise enough money for a month-long trip to the Greek islands.  However, the business quickly blossomed and, together with his brother, he began supplying garden centres and their topsoil became known as Wotherspoon’s Black Gold.  He currently works as a Regional Sales Manager for Sainsbury’s Energy and looks after a team of 30 sales agents across the North.
