The 2007 Tillotson Lecture was, this year, delivered by Professor Chris Higson of London Business School. Professor Higson is an Old Boy of Bolton School Boys' Division and was delighted to return to the School, having left 39 years ago. After leaving the School, he gained degrees in Philosophy and in Economics from University College, London, and a doctorate in finance from London Business School, where he is a Professor of Accounting and a highly respected teacher.
Professor Higson's lecture to an audience of pupils, parents, teaching staff, special guests and governors was entitled "What Should We Do About Private Equity?” and focused on the pros and cons of this controversial area of finance. He concluded an interesting talk by saying the jury is still out and although it is clear that private equity investors do make huge amounts of money, further research needs to be done on exactly how they do this.
The Tillotson Lecture has been running since 1971 at the behest of Marcus Tillotson, a great supporter of Bolton School. Sadly, in his ninetieth year and in the thirty fifth year of the lecture series, Marcus Tillotson passed away. The audience for Professor Higson was the largest since Sir Ian McKellen, another Old Boy, delivered his lecture in 2004.
