Great Britain's Water Polo team has just returned from a series of international matches in Egypt.
Out of the 13 man team, 4 members are either students or ex-students of Bolton School and all the boys hail originally from the Bolton area. Charles Booth, who is from Turton, is currently in Year 13 at Bolton School. Ed Scott and Rob Rae both graduated from Bolton School over the summer and Andy Crawford left Bolton School in the summer of 2004. Ed Scott, who graduated this summer with grade A passes in his A Levels, has decided to take a year out in order to play water polo with a crack Hungarian team. He will then go to the University of Leeds to study medicine. Rob Rae who also left Bolton School this summer is studying Geography at Manchester University. Andy Crawford is due to complete his studies at the University of Bath in 2007. Ed Scott and Andy Crawford are both goalkeepers, Rob Rae is a Centre Forward and Charles Booth plays on the wing. Although the squad comprises 13 team members, only seven are ever in the water at the same time.
Charles Booth of Bolton School commented: "This was a young team, the age ranged from myself who was the youngest at 17 through to a 24 year old. It was my first trip abroad with the senior team and a fantastic experience. The British team has it sights set firmly on 2012 and has just appointed a new coach from Holland. A High Performance Centre in Manchester has been recently set up to further develop the sport.”
The games against Egypt, Saudi Arabia and South Africa took place over Thursday 14, Friday 15 and Saturday 16 September. The British team beat Saudi Arabia 15-6 and lost narrowly to Egypt (8-9) and to South Africa (7-11).
