Bolton School's 2007 Science Festival brought science alive for youngsters from across the borough. This year's event has proven to be the most popular yet with 33 local primary schools each sending a team made up of 4 pupils from Year 5. The festival provided an opportunity for young pupils to make use of Bolton School’s laboratories and resources and to absorb themselves in Science for the day.
Pupils moved from Chemistry to Biology classrooms and laboratories in both the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions as they undertook a variety of stimulating and practical activities throughout the day.
The afternoon was rounded off by a science magic show by Richard Robinson and an awards ceremony. A number of quizzes had taken place during the day and a cheque for £150 plus some books were handed out to the winning school, St Georges CE School of Westhoughton. The Oaks School won the Science Knowledge Quiz prize, Mytham Primary School won the Forensic Science activity and Blackrod CP won the Chemistry activity.
Jemimah from St George’s summed up the day when she said: "It’s been absolutely brilliant. I’ve loved every minute of it. I was so excited when our name came up on the board and I realised we had won.” Her teacher, Mrs Peacock commented: “the day was extremely well organised and fun-packed. The children and I learnt lots.”
Dr Mullins, Head of Biology at Bolton School and organiser of the event said: “It’s been an excellent day. The Science Festival aims to inspire an early interest in Science amongst gifted young pupils - for me, this is what teaching is all about and it is becoming increasingly important. We are fortunate to have outstanding lab facilities to share with primary schools from all over the local area and, throughout the day, we have provided stimulating practical activities and demonstrations which challenge and stretch these young pupils.”
