year 7 pupil is elected for uK youth parliament

Boys' Division Year 7 pupil, Zuhayr Adia, has become be one of two new Bolton Youth MPs and will sit in the UK Youth Parliament.

Zuhayr, aged 11, was the youngest of six local candidates, whose ages ranged from 11 to 17, taking part in the Bolton Youth Election.  The position of Youth MP will involve attending national and regional meetings to help decide how government funding will be spent on youth projects.

Zuhayr has promised to address three main issues:

  • Free local public transport (buses, trains etc) for young people
  • More youth clubs so that there is a youth club in every area
  • Try to promote awareness of the dangers of gun and knife crime in Bolton.

Zuhayr, whose father is a local councillor, said: "I am interested in becoming a Youth MP because I feel that young people do not have enough say.  I will campaign to ensure that local councillors and MPs pay more attention to the views of young people.  I intend to work hard in this role as I become the new generation of Youth MP for Bolton in 2008."
