Over £8,000 has been raised for Bolton School's bursary fund by the Old Boys' Association. Twenty teams took part in a Golf Day held at Bolton Golf Club on Wednesday 13 September. The money was raised through teams’ entry fees, through advertising in the programme and through an auction and raffle held at a dinner after the event. The proceeds from the Golf Day will help the school maintain the ethos of Lord Leverhulme who, when re-endowing the School in 1913, wanted to offer an education for all, regardless of financial circumstances. Bolton School currently has 260 bursary-assisted places and hopes to increase this number to 300 over the next three years.
Frank Millhouse, organiser of the event and President of the Old Boys’ Association, commented: "We’ve had a wonderful day. It’s the first time we have run this event and there has been a lot of hard work for both myself and a tremendous team that has supported me. The results have been very gratifying. More than 50 years ago I attended the School by virtue of the local authority scholarship system. Without that help I would not have had such a life changing opportunity. With the many changes in education it is now up to the School itself to raise funds so that pupils can receive bursaries. The Old Boys are delighted to support that fund. The diversity of pupils is one of the School’s strengths and the money raised today will make a genuine difference to someone’s life.”
