In order to enrich the Sixth Form experience, we offer a wide range of short courses and activities. By choosing wisely students can maintain a good balance between Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences, give breadth to their studies and pursue new interests and activities—while gaining the maximum benefit and enjoyment from their time in the Sixth Form.
Although no individual courses are compulsory students must take a minimum of six short courses in the Lower Sixth and four in the Upper Sixth. Typical choices might be Cookery, Criminology, Stress Reduction and Relaxation or Philosophy through Film. Games and other recreational activities are also included, but are not compulsory.
Within the Curriculum Enrichment Programme, Lower Sixth students are also provided with the opportunity to do an additional qualification, AS Critical Thinking, where they learn to apply logical reasoning. This qualification is recognised by many universities.
In the Upper Sixth students can choose to take General Studies AS or A Level and the Curriculum Enrichment Programme helps to provide students with useful courses which lead to wider knowledge in preparation for these qualifications.
Community Action also forms part of this programme. The aim of the scheme is to offer help to those in need. Many students go to primary schools while others visit pre-school nurseries, hospitals or hospices as well as visiting the elderly in their own homes or residential homes. The students who take part comment on the enormous personal satisfaction they gain from the scheme. Certificates are awarded to those who successfully complete their placements. We also have close links with the Bolton "V Involved" team who can arrange placements and support our volunteers.
