Music

Our well-staffed and resourced department offers many opportunities to anyone interested in music. We have four class teachers and twenty-one visiting instrumental teachers who are specialists in all orchestral instruments, percussion, guitar, piano, organ and singing. In addition, visiting artists run music workshops.

In the Senior School there are ensembles and choirs at all levels, including the Middle School and Senior Choirs, String Orchestra, Intermediate Concert Band, Flute and Clarinet Choirs, a Saxophone group, a Percussion group and various other ensembles. There are also many joint activities with the Boys' Division, including a Chamber Choir (who have broadcast regularly on Radio 4), Jazz Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Guitar and Percussion Ensembles. In addition, the Junior School has a choir, recorder group and orchestra. There is an annual Joint Choral Concert in which our Parents' Choir perform.

Girls have a wide range of performing opportunities from informal music evenings to the major concerts held each term involving choirs, orchestras and larger groups. A number of events take place out of school, such as concerts in the community or music weekends at Patterdale Hall as well as overseas tours to destinations such as Tuscany, Flanders, Barcelona, Venice, Lake Garda, the Czech Republic, Paris and, in 2008, Vienna.

Our concerts are open to the public. Recent programmes have included: Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man - A Mass for Peace, Bruch's Violin Concerto, Grieg's Piano Concerto, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony and other major orchestral works, the Mozart Requiem, Schubert's Unfinished Symphony, Vivaldi's Gloria, the John Rutter Requiem and the joint production of West Side Story. The Chamber Choir and Girls' Choir recently issued a CD entitled Reflections.
