2nd and 3rd in national science writing competition

Yasmine Surendramohan of Year 11 and Akshaya Kumar from Year 10 are celebrating reaching 2nd and 3rd place respectively in the national Science Writing Competition, SciNews 2007, run by Cancer Research UK.

The competition was launched during National Science Week and the two Girls' Division pupils had to write a news story about a recent medical or health related advance.  The competition was for pupils aged 14-16 and there were several hundred entrants.

Yasmine wrote about how chocolate boosts brainpower.  "Yasmine had a good writing style and her story was well-structured,” enthused Tim Radford, former Science Editor of the Guardian and one of the panel of judges.  Coincidentally, Yasmine spends time as a volunteer helper for Cancer Research UK.

Akshaya's news story was about an alternative to injections for people suffering from diabetes.   Tim Radford commented that “Akshaya packed in lots of detail and explanation.”

The pupils collected their prizes - science books and gift vouchers - from Jane Bullock, Senior Press Office at Cancer Research UK and herself an Old Girl of Bolton School.
