October 5th saw a first for the Girls' Division when, as part of Black History Month, Year 10 and 11 GCSE Music students attended a workshop on African Drumming and Dance. The session was led by local musician, Nat Biney, who is a Ghanaian by birth and founder of the African cultural group, Osagyefo.
Armed with authentic drums, shakers and agogo bells, the girls followed the master drummer who gave the tempo, pulse and dynamics and indicated when to start and stop whilst the girls danced. They also learnt the basic steps of African dancing, working in lines and circles before graduating to solos and improvisations.
Echoing the enthusiastic response to the workshop, Year 10 student, Robyn, said it was "the best thing we have done in ages”. Not surprisingly, many would love to do it again next year.
