Three Girls' Division Sixth Form students have organised an X-Factor style talent show in memory of the two Sixth Form boys - Daniel Harrison and Jonathan Sharples – who died in a car crash in December of last year. The three girls, Lauren Ashton, Sophie Barnett and Katie Bridge were ably assisted by Emma Harrison and Gabby Wilkins. Katie commented: "We wanted to do this for Jonny and Danny to help celebrate their lives. This is something that a lot of people will enjoy and we also want to raise as much as we can for Brake.”
Over 700 tickets were sold which meant the Great Hall was packed to the rafters. Sixteen acts took part, having come through some hotly contested qualifying rounds. Acts included pop groups, singers, dance acts, guitar quartets, saxophonists, pianists and drummers. The School Jazz Band played during the interval. The judging panel included Helen Flanagan otherwise known as Rosie Webster in Coronation Street, presenter and model Jemma Gofton and clothes designer Vicky Martin. Whilst the judges deliberated, Vicky Cull dedicated her song “Wish Upon a Star” to Jonny and Danny. The eventual winner was Luci Fish, a Year 11 pupil, who sang “What a Wonderful World”.
There was also a raffle on the evening with many wonderful prizes including a signed boxing glove from Amir Khan, an mp3 player and vouchers to use to pay for a recording session in a studio.
The event raised almost £5,000 for the road safety charity Brake.
Mrs McLellan, Head of Sixth Form commented: “We are really proud of the girls. They organised a great event and managed to raise almost £5,000 for the road safety charity Brake. It was a fantastic effort and a fitting tribute to the boys.”
