Our future priorities

Building for the future

At Bolton School, we have some of the best educational facilities and resources available within the North of England. However, it is important to invest constantly in these facilities to ensure we continue to keep pace with rapid technological changes and meet the needs of all our pupils.

In recent years many of our former pupils and parents have kindly donated to the School's Annual Fund. These gifts have allowed each section of the School to invest in some fantastic new resources and opportunities including programmable robots for Park Road and new playground equipment for the Junior and Infant schools. Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Annual Fund, your gifts have made a very real and immediate difference to our pupils.

Over the last two years the School has invested over £12 million in developing new, state-of-the-art infant and junior school provision, creating an impressive new facility for our Infants in Beech House, a refurbished Park Road for our Junior Boys and a fantastic, standalone building for our Junior Girls, called Hesketh House. A new Sixth Form Centre

We are now looking to develop the School's Sixth Form provision by constructing an exciting, shared Sixth Form Centre within the School campus.  You can read a news story item here.

The Centre will provide independence for our Sixth Formers and will encompass:

  • a state of the art ICT suite, with seminar rooms for project work and tutorial sessions;
  • quiet study spaces for individual research and learning;
  • a relaxed common room area for the pupils to socialise in and enjoy during their lunch and study breaks;
  • a refectory café area;
  • an exhibition room to be used across the Foundation for a variety of events for parents, pupils, visitors and our alumni; and
  • a main School reception and Sixth Form staff offices.

Lessons will still be taught in a single sex environment, but the Centre will be shared by both our Sixth Form girls and boys and will provide top-quality facilities to match the already excellent academic teaching.

This will provide an ideal setting in which our pupils can conduct their A Level work, giving them the best of both worlds - a first-rate, single-sex education with resources for collaborative and private study in an independent, sociable, mixed environment, bridging the gap between their School years and adult lives.  School will be shortly be seeking planning permission to begin the build in 2012.

Although we are in a solid financial position, School cannot prudently fund this new venture entirely from our financial reserves, in addition to funding our recent, significant building works. Unlike some independent Schools, we do not have a huge endowment fund to call upon - our endowment essentially comprises of our iconic main buildings, given to our pupils by Lord Leverhulme. We are therefore looking to continue this tradition of philanthropy and finance the Sixth Form Centre through donations. So far, we have raised around half the amount needed to push ahead with the development. We are aiming to secure a further £1 million within the next year.

The new Sixth Form Centre is going to be an excellent addition to the School campus and provide a real benefit to our pupils. There are several key naming opportunities available within the development - if you are interested in finding out about these or about how you can support this venture , please contact Julia Bates our Head of External Relations on (01204) 434 718 or jbates@boltonschool.org.uk.
