News Item: January 2009
Sir Peter Ogden and Tim Simmons, Chief Executive of the Ogden
Trust, made a flying visit, literally, to Bolton School to meet the
school's Ogden Scholars. The duo flew in by helicopter from
the Channel Islands via Cambridge and landed on the girls' lacrosse
pitch before meeting up with the scholars. Several years ago
the Ogden Trust sponsored talented young people from primary
schools in the state sector to join 60 of the UK's top independent
schools. Since 2001, 35 pupils have passed through Bolton
School as recipients of scholarships from the Ogden Trust.
During the visit, Sir Peter and Mr Simmons found out how the
students were faring and what they were planning to do after
finishing their studies. They then enjoyed lunch with the
Headmaster and Headmistress, as well as a number of managers from
companies that have co-funded the scholarships.
Sir Peter is originally from Rochdale and, having become a
multi-millionaire through his own computer business, set up the
Ogden Trust with the aim of encouraging bright children from low
income backgrounds to study science, particularly Physics.
The Ogden Trust Science Scholarships now operate at Sixth Form
and Undergraduate level. This year Bolton School is hoping to
enlist a number of Sixth Form students from the state sector as
Ogden Scholars. Applicants must choose A Level Physics and
Maths and have an intention to go on and study Physics at
university. You can learn more about the
Ogden Trust scheme and others within our
