A gift in your Will - no matter the size - can be a very special
way to provide support to future generations of pupils. It means
that your legacy can live on ad infinitum and you can make a very
real, lasting difference to the lives of Bolton School's students
of tomorrow. Inspired by Lord Leverhulme's example, many wish to do
what they can to set up bursaries to enable for future generations
of talented local pupils to benefit from our excellent teaching and
facilities.
Leaving a legacy to the School is a tax-effective way to support
our Bursary Fund, as all gifts are exempt from inheritance tax,
reducing the overall liability of your estate.
If you are thinking about leaving a legacy to the School it is
helpful if we can know in advance to aid our future planning, but
more importantly it enables us to show our gratitude to you
personally and keep you abreast of our current development plans.
If you would like to let us know your intentions, you can do so
using the pledge form below - any information
we receive is of course strictly confidential and is not legally
binding in any way.
Before writing your Will, we do suggest you seek
professional advice to ensure the wording matches your
intention. It might be helpful to know that most of our
supporters choose to either leave a set amount (bequest) or a
percentage of the residue of their estate (residuary legacy).
The standard wording for each of these types of legacies can be
found below:
A Codicil adding a Bequest to an existing Will (an
amendment to a Will)
A bequest allows you to leave a set amount to the School in
you Will.
I ... (your name) ... of ... (your address) ... declare this to
be the first (... or second etc. ...) Codicil to my Will dated and
made the ... (date) ... of ... (month and year).
In addition to the legacies given by my said Will I give the
following further charitable legacy absolutely:
To, Bolton School, Chorley New Road, Bolton BL1 4PA, United
Kingdom, ("the Charity") the sum of £
............................ for the general purposes of the
Charity and with the full power to realise such assets and to apply
the proceeds to the general purposes of the Charity, and I direct
that a receipt of the Clerk and Treasurer or other authorised
officer for the time being of the Charity shall be a good and
sufficient discharge to my Executors for the payment to the
Charity.
In all other respects I confirm my said Will.
(A Codicil needs to be separately signed, dated and
witnessed by two independent witnesses as for a Will in its own
right.)
A Residuary Legacy (a portion of your
estate)
A Residuary Legacy allows you to leave either a percentage
or share of the residue of your estate (i.e. once the main
benefactors of your Will have received their portion of your
estate).
I devise and bequeath (a percentage or share) of the residue of
my estate absolutely to Bolton School, Chorley New Road, Bolton BL1
4PA, United Kingdom, hereinafter called "the Charity", such sum to
be applied for the general purposes of the Charity and with full
power to expend capital as well as income for such purposes and I
direct that a receipt of the Clerk and Treasurer or other
authorised officer for the time being of the Charity shall be a
good and sufficient discharge to my Executors for the payment to
the Charity.
