Bolton School's Catering Department played an integral part in
the One Halliwell "Respect Me, Respect You" festival, which
celebrated the cultural diversity of Halliwell.
The festival was held on the 17th April at Bolton
Rugby Club and brought together a varied mix of international
entertainment, music, dance and food, with an emphasis on
allowing the young people of Halliwell to showcase their
talent.
In preparation for the event, Bolton School Catering Manager
Karen Riley and her team worked with the various cultural groups,
providing training on their sample dishes and helping them all to
achieve their Basic Food Hygiene Certificate. They supported the
groups with food choices and helped to organise the food on the
day.
Visitors to the festival gave a donation to Bolton Hospice and
in return received a choice of over 50 cultural dishes from the
various stands. There was also a whole host of other activities for
visitors to enjoy including a steel band, dancing, fairground
rides, Bolton Wanderers 5 a-side football, a climbing wall,
gymnastics displays, face painting, Henna painting, a bouncy
castle, a bird of prey demonstration and children's arts and crafts
activities.
The event was organised by Bolton Council's Halliwell
Neighbourhood Management group and key sponsors besides Bolton
School include Bolton at Home, Bolton Community College, Bolton
Wanderers, Contour Homes, Halliwell Historical Society, Greater
Manchester Police and Bolton RUFC. The day was a huge success, and
certainly achieved the objective of bringing the different cultures
together and raising the profile of the people of Halliwell.
