Catering goes Green with Grott Box

The Catering Department at Bolton School has been doing its bit for the environment by using the revolutionary 'Grott Box', which allows food waste to be put to good use.

The 'Grott Box'is the first product from Angelheartinc Ltd, and is a 100% fully bio degradable container that allows food waste to be put to good use instead of ending up in landfill. The box is designed to collect all food waste from homes and businesses, and then recycle the waste through an Anaerobic Digestion unit. The special bio degradable coating ensures that the cardboard does not leak or emit any unpleasant smells when it is filled with food waste.

The Boys' Division piloted the scheme in June last year working with the Estates and Grounds departments, and it has now been cascaded through the remainder of the Department. Any food waste that is produced either in food preparation such as fruit core, peelings, and damaged products, alongside the waste food that is returned on meal trays, is stored in the grott sack which is collected once a week. The moisture is then removed and it is composted down and dried over a period of time to utilise in another format. This has saved over one tonne of waste already that would have otherwise gone to landfill.
