Re-endowed by Sir W H Lever in 1915 as a joint foundation,
Bolton School brings together the former Bolton Grammar School and
Bolton High School for Girls. Since that date the Governing Body
has overseen the direction of the Foundation as it pursues academic
excellence and endeavours to offer an education for all
academically gifted pupils, irrespective of their parents'
income.
Recent Chairmen of the Governing Body include Lord Leverhulme
(1949-1990), Lord Haslam (1990-97) and Sir Alan Cockshaw
(1997-2007). The current Chairman is Michael Griffiths. He
was appointed in January 2008, having been a pupil at Bolton School
himself and a governor since 1986. Mr Griffiths
works with a dedicated and multi-talented group that
encompasses a wide range of expertise. The group changes
composition from time to time but ordinarily comprises 18-20
members, including parents and former students as well as
high-ranking professionals from the worlds of business,
banking, law, education and politics.
The Governing Body is the School's proprietor and
is charged with the overall management and strategic direction
of the Bolton School Foundation. As a body it meets regularly and
its members are also involved in a wide range of sub-committees
that deal with the Foundation's education, finance, health and
safety, fundraising, investment and executive activities.

"Bolton School is not only fortunate to have elegant buildings
and impressive facilities, it possesses an atmosphere of learning
and energy. Visitors comment that staff and students from both
Divisions appear purposeful and enthusiastic, a feature which I
also admire about the place. Standards are high all round and the
facilities really do get used. Further, I like the "Open Door"
policy of the school which gives it a broad social mix of students,
enabled by Bursary Fund assistance to parents who need financial
support. The School is special and worthy of support, which is why
I accepted the invitation to become a Governor. I find my
involvement very stimulating."
