Honorary Doctorates for Old Boys

Two Bolton School Old Boys - Nobel Prize winner Sir Harry Kroto and Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short, have been awarded Honorary Doctorates from the University of Bolton.

The University awards the Honorary Doctorates to those who are examples of the shining talent of Bolton, in fields of particular interest to the University - from those successful in the media, the academic world, the creative industries of entertainment and music, as well as sport.

Sir Harry is one of the world's best known Chemists and his discovery of the carbon molecule, C60 Buckminsterfullerene, led to him being awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996. Nigel Short became a Grandmaster at age 19 and is often regarded as the strongest English chess player of the 20th century.

Former Chair of Governors at Bolton School, Sir Alan Cockshaw, was also honoured, along with Jerry Glover formerly of Bolton Lads and Girls Club and other well known figures including Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce.
