HE has been named the best headteacher in the world - and he is
from Bolton.
Former Bolton School pupil David Toze has beaten off competition
from across the globe to be awarded the title Superintendent of the
Year.
He was recognised by the Association for the Advancement of
International Education (AAIE), the parent body of elite
international schools, due to his professionalism, leadership and
community involvement.
Mr Toze, who grew up in Walkden and now works in Manila in the
Philippines, was handed the honour at a glittering ceremony in San
Francisco.
The 57-year-old is the first Brit to win the coveted title.
He said: "It was a shock to win, since I was the first Brit to
get the award."
Headteachers at schools he worked at in Frankfurt and Bangkok,
along with staff at the US State Department, wrote to the judging
panel supporting his work.
Mr Toze, who has a masters from Harvard, worked in Birmingham,
Columbia, Vienna and Guernsey, before taking on the role of
Superintendent of International School Manila in the Philippines 10
years ago.
His work involves teaching gifted students who have gone to
universities such as Yale, Harvard and Oxford. Some 12 languages
are spoken at the school, with 65 countries represented.
But Mr Toze is still loyal to his roots and continues to support
Bolton Wanderers and will be watching Sunday's FA Cup semi-final at
Wembley against Stoke City.
The father of 15-yearold twins, said: "I'm the lone Bolton
supporter in the Philippines.
"I'm a Boltonian by birth and a Wanderer by choice.
"I'll definitely be watching the semi-final. I'm very proud of
where I came from."
Also a keen cricketer, Mr Toze was in Kearsley and St Andrew's
first teams in the 1970s and still returns to Bolton every year to
get together with his cricket pals.
He said: "Bolton has always been my home and I feel comfortable
there whenever I come back."
Laughing off his Best Head teacher in the World status, he
added: "People keep calling me that, but I must be modest. My wife,
Clara, is very proud though."
The accolade follows on from an MBE he received in 1994 while
teaching in Columbia.
