The Society was formed well over 80 years ago, although current
records only date as far back as 1955. Membership is open to all
old boys and staff, although it is hoped that boys in their final
year may wish to come and play in the Medal round held in late
July.
A team is usually entered in the prestigious Public Schools Old
Boys Golf Association Scratch Foursomes held at Hunstanton, where a
high standard of Golf is apparent. Over the years we have had
variable success, and whilst never having won the event, we have
reached the final in 1978 and 1980 and the semi final in 1999. We
are fortunate to receive an invitation to enter and it reflects
well on the reputation of the School and the standard of the
golfers we have had representing us.
More locally, a handicap team has sometimes entered the Lord
John Morley LOBAGS event, but this often clashes with our own
Taylor Trophy in July.
There are three competitions held throughout the year, starting
in April with a match play knock out, which runs during the summer.
The Match play Rosebowl was originally donated by Colin Roberts, a
past Secretary of the Society.
In late July we usually play a medal round at Bolton Golf Club
for the Taylor Trophy presented originally by Dr H W Taylor
(1908-1914)
In early October we hold a Foursomes, usually at Turton, for the
Gwynne Jones Goblets, presented by the sons of the late E Gwynne
Jones-(Staff 1907-1944). This meeting is then followed by an A.G.M.
and presentation.
Any Old Boy who may be visiting the North West in late July or
early October and would like to attend either of the meetings would
be more than welcome. Further details can be obtained from the Old
Boys Liaison Office at School.
