Local Public Benefit: Junior School

This information should be read in conjunction with the other activities in this section particularly Sport, Community Service and Local Charity Work.

• New in 2009/10, the SHINE: Serious Fun on Saturdays programme.  Thirty eight Year 5 pupils from local primary schools utilised the School's facilities and enjoyed expert tuition.  A range of subjects were studied over 11 term-time Saturdays; everything from traditional subjects such as History and the sciences to Japanese, Martial Arts and Russian
• New in 2009: Annual Modern Foreign Languages Festival, which will be open to local primary schools. Pupils will be able to sample taster courses in French, Russian, German, Spanish and Japanese, make use of the School's resources and receive expert tuition from experienced language teachers.
• Sports Festival: this is an annual event and often involves over 300 pupils from as many as 30 primary schools. There is a wide range of sporting activities and prizes are handed out by celebrities.
• Science Festival: this is an annual event and up to thirty local primary schools attend Bolton School for the day. There are a number of practical activities designed to stretch and inspire gifted young pupils.
• In 2009 former pupil, Professor Sir Harry Kroto, Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, returned to deliver a day of workshops and talks aimed at inspiring an interest in Science amongst the region's young people.  Sir Harry addressed over 1,000 pupils from Primary and Secondary schools across the region with a day of fun activities and lectures, as part of the Ogden Trust Science Partnership, an initiative between local schools and universities which aims to promote science and engineering to young people.
• Science visits: senior students will visit up to 20 schools to help with science clubs
• The Crusader Cup: an annual Five-a-side Football Competition for local Junior Schools organised by the School's soccer coach and former Bolton Wanderers' goalkeeper, Mr Keith Brannigan. Mr Brannigan also visits local primary schools to teach soccer skills.
• Our Online Mathematics Challenge tests the KS2 knowledge of Year 5 and Year 6 pupils. The quiz takes place online and pupils have their efforts marked by our Mathematics Department. Take the Primary Maths Online Challenge
• Local Primaries' Newspaper Challenge: six local primaries are tutored by our own pupils on how to produce and design a school newspaper.
• Art support - 2 staff/12 students to Our Lady of Lourdes
• Boys' Division - various individual events supporting primary schools eg 10 students visiting a school to help with an "Art Day"
• Junior Boys' joint concert - 2 schools per year in Great Hall
• Music workshops: one primary school per year joins a workshop with our Year 7 students
• visits to local schools to perform musical recitals
• Joint Concert: two schools per yer join with our own School ensembles for the Boys' Division Senior School Autumn Concert
• Girls' Division Food Technology maintains links with local primary schools via a Year 7 Lunch scheme for Head teachers and teachers
• Sixth Form volunteers (Girls' Division) undertake work in three local primary schools
