Bolton School pupils triumphed in the face of adversity with
their stunning performance of Aristophanes' Greek Comedy 'The
Frogs', despite the show nearly being ruined by a leaky
radiator!
With less than a week to go until opening night, the drama
studio was flooded overnight by the radiator, leaving some of
the set and technical equipment damaged. Undeterred, the
Maintenance team and staff got to work drying things out with
dehumidifiers and repairing and replacing the scenery, and the show
could go on!
Pupils from Year 7 to the final year of Sixth Form, along with
many teachers, have been involved in making the joint production a
huge success. The 26 cast members have been rehearsing for months
and have been ably supported by other pupils and teachers involved
in designing the authentic and brilliantly coloured costumes and
stage sets, and with music and lighting to set the scene.
Teacher Mr Phil Challinor could not praise the students highly
enough: "We were genuinely spoilt for choice in picking our cast
for this production from the girls and boys at Bolton School, and
have been hugely impressed by the talent and interpretative skills
of those we finally chose. They have shown a real talent and
flair for comedy, both physical and verbal, and have contributed
masses of ideas themselves, really getting into the spirit of
democracy, which is of course very fitting! The students' ability
to learn what is at times a difficult script, as well as coping
with their GCSE's and A Levels, has been incredible, and we hope
they have gained valuable experiences from their involvement with
the production. Working in Greek Comedy is a humbling
experience for any actor, since all egos and any hope of dignity
must be left firmly backstage. What a sacrifice our girls and
boys have made for their audience's amusement!"
The production is being staged in the Girls'
Division Theatre over three evenings (24-26 March).
