Mr Teasdale Commended in Biology Teacher of the Year Award

Wednesday, 04 February 2015

Mr David Teasdale has been Highly Commended by the judges at this year’s School Biology Teacher of the Year Award. The award is run by the Society of Biology, and was created to recognise the inspirational work of biology teachers in 11-18 education in the UK.

Nominated teachers must demonstrate their outstanding teaching of biology, but also a number of other criteria are examined. For example, entrants are expected to share best practice in the teaching of their subject, to spread their enthusiasm for biology, and influence the teaching and learning of biology beyond their own institution. Another important factor the judges are looking for is how teachers inspire pupils outside of the classroom and support high-quality extra-curricular learning opportunities, such as the Animal Care Club that Mr Teasdale set up at the start of the academic year.

The three finalists for the 2015 competition have now been announced, and Mr Teasdale has been Highly Commended by the judges.

Mr Teasdale said, “I was surprised to receive recognition in the Biology Teacher of the Year Award. However, it is as much a reflection on my outstanding department and the School as it is on me individually. In particular I would like to thank my inspirational head of department, Marc Tillotson, who encouraged me to apply.”

This recognition is a particularly impressive achievement as Mr Teasdale has been teaching for two and a half years and the award is aimed at teacher with five or more years of experience! There were also record numbers of entrants from a wide field, but he was the only one to achieve this level of merit.

Dr Mark Downs FSB, chief executive of the Society of Biology, said, “Excellent teachers have a profound and positive effect on their students’ learning; widening their students’ knowledge and skills base, increasing their self-confidence and raising their aspirations. The entrants for this year’s award are teaching outstanding and innovative lessons which inspire and enthuse their students. Many congratulations to our three award finalists and one highly commended teacher.”

As well as teaching at Bolton School, Mr Teasdale is also an Old Boy.
