Local Public Benefit: Community Service

The School interacts with and serves the local community in many ways, here are some recent activities:

  • The School has set up an Ogden Trust Science Partnership between local schools and universities. It provides a forum to promote teaching and learning in Science.
  • Junior School Choir sings at Old Peoples' Homes. Senior students do community service in a number of these homes
  • Barnardos Chorley & Salford Families' Project - boys volunteer in holidays
  • Bolton Hospice - boys and girls help out
  • Scouts: host 19th Bolton Cubs, Venturers and Explorers - one of the largest packs in the area
  • Gifted and Talented Coordinator: joins local LEA cluster group
  • Community Service Programme offered as part of Girls' Sixth Form Curriculum Enrichment Programme
  • Bolton Primary Schools' Football Committee: Boys' Junior School Head is a member
  • Girls' Sixth Form coordinates 60 volunteers to work in local primary schools, Bolton Children's Opportunity Group, The Clough Nursing Home, Parkview, Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club and charities including Mencap and Barnardos.
  • 20 girls work towards the Millennium Volunteer Award each year
  • links with Parish of St Paul's, Salford, including accompanying a children's day trip
  • students regularly visit and donate to many different local religious centres
  • links with Bolton Muslim Council and Girls' School and Bolton Hindu Forum
  • blood donors: 90% of Sixth Form sign up on special arrangement
  • links with Rotary Club of Bolton Lever via Interact Club
  • Bolton School Nursery: links with the local Sure Start and EYDCP schemes
  • Bolton School Nursery: hosts Foundation Stage cluster group meetings
  • Beech House: provides work experience for Year 11 pupils from other schools
  • Junior Girls' Department: provides work experience for pupils from local LEA schools and university

  • School staff visit schools to talk on outdoor pursuits, safety on trips, sport etc
  • Chief Examiners/Moderators: several staff hold senior positions with examination boards, many staff involved as markers at A Level and GCSE
  • PGCE Student Teachers: we host up to 6 students for one term each in various subjects every year
  • Trainee teachers: we accept 2 or 3 trainees every year to observe lessons
  • Teacher Exchanges: staff visit other schools and reciprocate for a day's INSET in their particular subject
  • Bolton School Nursery: supports local colleges in the training of young students
  • Local Area Forum: hosted for 2 local wards
  • School events: Tillotson Lecture, Concerts and Drama Productions are open to the local community, by invitation
  • Girls' Division: member of 14-19 advisory group of Bolton LEA, Bolton Lifelong Learning Partnership and Building Schools for the Future
