Local Public Benefit: Sport

Bolton School shares its sporting facilities with the community in many ways:

  • Bolton School has been the Independent Schools Football Association (ISFA) Focus School for the Manchester and North-West region since 2009. We work closely with ISFA to spread ideas from the centre throughout schools in the whole region through a series of coaching courses, festivals and invitational afternoons to help spread best practice.
  • Member of Bolton Schools' PE Association and host their termly meetings
  • Trials for Town Teams and County held here for soccer, rugby and cricket
  • Football pitches sometimes used by professional teams prior to their games against Bolton Wanderers FC or Bury FC
  • Town Team cup finals - football
  • Many state schools will reverse the venue of a cup match at football/rugby/cricket, sacrificing home advantage so their children can play on our pitches - they enjoy the experience
  • Cricket: Bolton School is now an MCC Hub Centre for the area, offering elite coaching to local school children
  • Cricket: host, annually, the Andrew Flintoff Cricket Academy
  • Host Bolton Indoor Cricket League
  • Rugby: previous winners of the Lancashire Rugby School of the Year award for our contribution towards rugby in the county. Staff are involved in the county organisation and the county have used our facilities for the prestigious County Schools' Finals.  Mr Paul Fernside is involved as Chair of Lancashire Schools, coach and England selector.
  • Bolton Schools' League for Rugby Union: started at Bolton School, now based at Bolton Rugby Club. The school pitches are used as a satellite site for the project.
  • Bolton Rugby Union FC have used the pitches when their fields are unfit, school has offered our facilities as they undergo revamp work during 2012-13
  • Rugby: run courses for coaches, referees, groundstaff - the School is being used by the RFU as a training centre
  • Rugby League - the School hosted the development for rugby league in Bolton, ran by John Duffy of Leigh Centurions RLFC
  • Hosted Sale Sharks' Primary Schools' Tag Rugby Festival
  • Leigh Centurions RLFC and Sale Sharks RUFC both used the pitches in 2011-12 to prepare for forthcoming matches
  • Water polo: Centre for the North for Excellence and Hayden Howard is a Regional Training Centre Coach
  • Pool used for English Schools' Swimming Association Events - at cost
  • Girls' Division organise and host the Bolton Swimming Championships for the Sixth Form on behalf of the PE Association
  • Have organised the Sixth Form Athletics Championships
  • Netball courts used for local and County tournaments and also hosting National Schools' Tournament
  • Provided lacrosse facilities for the North of England trials
  • Use of our facilities by primary schools eg Devonshire Road, who use our pool, Leverhulme site etc
  • Annual primary schools' sports festival
  • Annual primary schools' football competitions; boys and girls
  • Old Boltonians' FC will be using the fields in 2012-13 whilst their pitches undergo drainage work. Old Bolts' pitches will then be widely used in the community - including girls' football
