Bolton School’s Early Years’ Foundation Stage (EYFS) provision has been awarded the top judgement of being “outstanding” in all categories by the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI). The report on the School’s provision in its co-educational Nursery, the Reception year at Beech House Infant School and in Kidzone, the School’s wraparound childcare club, found that “the overall effectiveness of the EYFS is outstanding.” The report highlighted how the youngest pupils make excellent progress, that children’s personal development is excellent and that “outcomes for children are outstanding.” The learning and care of children were praised as “exemplary, with the needs of all children, including those identified as having SEND, EAL and the more able, catered for extremely well.”
Within the School, the report found that “there is a shared desire amongst all staff to provide the best possible education and care for early years' children.” The setting was also praised as being one where “high behavioural expectations are promoted strongly.”
The personal development and behaviour of children were also judged to be “outstanding” and staff were commended for successfully promoting a culture of mutual respect and love for learning. The report said that children “listen well and behave impeccably.” The quality of teaching, learning and assessment was found to be outstanding and Inspectors reported that “excellent use is made of the highly appropriate and stimulating resources, indoors and outdoors.” Special mention was also made of the innovative Saturday drop-in sessions and evening workshops which “provide working parents with a chance to learn a range of relevant skills, so that they can support their children’s continuing learning at home.” It was also noted that the “curriculum is further enhanced for children over three through the provision of specialist lessons such as ballet, swimming and French.”
Head of the EYFS provision at Bolton School, Tracey Taylor, was delighted with the findings: “Our Reception Year, fantastic co-educational Nursery and Kidzone, have all been commended for their high quality teaching and for ensuring outstanding outcomes for the children. I was pleased that the report noted the excellent progress that our children make and that they are well prepared for the next stage of their education.”
The Inspection also reported on the progress and achievement of children and young women in Bolton School Girls’ Division. The provision for Years 1-13, covering the co-educational Infant School, Hesketh House (the girls’ Junior School) and the girls’ Senior School received the top mark of being “excellent” in every category.
