English studies embrace the full range of language activities;
listening effectively, speaking appropriately, reading and
writing.
Reading strategies are essential for effective information
retrieval and comprehension of texts and therefore are developed
fully. Emphasis is placed on reading both for pleasure and for
information.The boys are encouraged to sample a wide range of
genres and authors in our extensive library which is in regular use
and is clearly appreciated.
In Years 4, 5 and 6 there are four elements to the Reading Award
Scheme. Reading material is chosen with teacher guidance and
each pupil completes a record sheet and is briefly questioned about
each completed book by his teacher. The scheme begins with
the Bronze Award in each year group and is intended to act as an
incentive to read different types of material, to appreciate
different genres and authors and to discover the variety of ways of
presenting the written words.
