The past academic year has seen the Junior Boys' School maintain
its tradition of playing high standard chess.
The boys performed at the Association of Junior Independent
Schools' Championships and won the team trophy and the cups for the
best Under 11 and Under 10 individual performances.
Besides retaining their title as Champions at the AJIS
competition, the boys gained two Silver Award trophies at the
English Primary Schools Chess Association Championships Northern
Semi Final.
The Under 11 team finished runners up in their section of the
BCF National Schools Championships. A particular highlight
was defeating Bluecoat School of Liverpool, whose average age was
16!
Headmaster, Mike Percik, said: "the boys have showed some real
talent and determination whilst competing in these championships.
To beat a team that is so much older than they are shows they are
capable of achieving ever greater heights in the future."
Sixty eight boys took part in the UK Chess Challenge at the
school and James Titterington managed to win all of his games in
the U9 section.
