Each year group has a variety of Design and Technology projects
which link to other areas of the curriculum. For instance, Year 5
design and make musical instruments which link both to their
Geography topic on Mexico and Science topic on Sounds. Each project
begins with pupils being asked to design a product for a specific
purpose: in Year 4 this is a practical beach bag which can be used
on holiday. They then plan, design and test their solution.
Group work is a key feature of Design and Technology lessons. By
working together and constructively evaluating the success of each
stage of the process, pupils learn to listen to and appreciate the
contributions of others.
Items which the children have produced are often displayed
in classrooms and the Junior Entrance Hall. At the end of
each topic the children are able to take home their work.
Some of the items created make ideal gifts. For example, Year 6
design Pop Up cards which are perfect to give someone on a special
occasion.
