"The classic Bolton School combination is hard work, good friends, challenging and thought-provoking teaching, a healthy desire to puncture the self-important and the sense that you can work hard to achieve things in life. "

Girls Learn About The Effects of War

Monday, 06 October 2014

The Quantum Theatre Company visited girls at Hesketh House and provided a thought-provoking insight into how World War I affected the lives of so many people.

Through their new play 'Your Country Needs You' which made use of original sources and materials from the time, they cleverly interwove songs, poetry and prose to examine the effects of war on those directly involved. The play was moving, informative and occasionally comical and it gave the girls a taste of wartime experience and how it affected the day to day lives of those involved.

Enthusing about the play, Ananya in Year 5, said: "This week we saw a spectacular show about World War 1 to commemorate 100 years since the start of World War which lasted from 1914 to 1918. It was mainly about an Englishman and a German man who became friends during the first year of the War. The show included short videos and some splendid songs which we all sang along to.

"We learned about different weapons and the boundary line; how they would trick other countries and about the underground hospitals. We learned many significant historial facts and found out a lot more information about World War I.

"The performance showed us things that we would never forget.  We could not help the loud applause, they really deserved it. It was very lively and interesting. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about World War I. What an amazing show to watch!"
