School to Host RNLI Fun Day

Wednesday, 29 February 2012

Bolton School is hosting a Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Fun Day on Saturday 10 March.

The event, which is open to the general public and will be opened by the Mayor of Bolton at 10.30am, will include a variety of displays detailing the RNLI's work.  There will be activities for youngsters, displays by the RNLI beach rescue, an inshore inflatable lifeboat and an opportunity to try out the kit used by lifeboat crews.  A beach life guard unit from Tyne and Wear will be at the School as will four members from the lifeboat at Lytham.

There will also be a display marking the 100 year anniversary of the sinking of The Titanic with extensive memorabilia relating to Sir Arthur Henry Rostron, born in Astley Bridge and a former pupil of Park Road, Bolton School's Junior Boys' School. Rostron was the Captain of the Carpathia, the ship that went to the aid of the floundering Titanic and helped rescue 706 people. There will also be a display about Tenacity of Bolton, the boat built by pupils at Bolton School and run by staff at Patterdale Hall, the School's outdoor pursuits centre in the Lake District.

President of the Bolton RNLI branch and Headmaster of Bolton School Boys' Division, Philip Britton, said: "I am eagerly anticipating the day and I do hope the people of Bolton will take time to visit the exhibition. Despite living some way from the sea, the people of Bolton have always been great supporters of the RNLI.  In 1870, the local branch raised £487 to buy a lifeboat named 'The Bolton' for a lifeboat station in Suffolk. Staunch support for the RNLI has continued in Bolton ever since. Our Fun Day promises just that, fun for children, whilst they also learn about the work that the RNLI does on a daily basis and visitors take time to reflect on the great rescue effort that saved so many lives at what was one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history."

The event will run from 10.30am-4.00pm in Bolton School's Arts and Conference Centre.
