I am Isabel Harper and I am Head Prefect of Hesketh
House.
Hesketh House is a warm and welcoming place to be. It is a
modern building with three floors. It is called Hesketh House as
Hesketh was the middle name of the first Lord Leverhulme who
donated some money to set up Bolton School.
If you go along the Year 3 corridor there is a new mural which
reminds us of the 16 Habits of Mind which guide us to do the right
things in our work and in our play.
The teachers at Hesketh House are always willing to help and are
keen for us to do well. They also work really hard to make the
lessons fun. Lessons at school include all sorts of different
things. We get to learn French, Spanish and even Latin in
Year 6. In Music lessons we learn the recorder to start with
and then in Year 4 we progress to violin and
keyboard.
Hesketh House has its own Science room complete with modern
equipment. It also contains its own library with hundreds of books
to share and to enjoy. There are music rooms and an ICT suite
providing all the latest technology. The School also has a
sports complex which includes a swimming pool, netball courts and a
field in which pupils are allowed to play on in the summer. At
lunch-time there are lots of clubs to choose from such as Cookery,
Recorder, Eco-club, Cross Country, Badminton, Netball, Choir,
Orchestra, Chess, Swimming and Ju-jitsu. It is difficult to decide
which one to go to as they are all great clubs.
The food at lunch time is really yummy! There is a choice of a
hot or a cold meal and there is always a choice of sandwiches,
jacket potatoes and salad. Puddings such as lemon meringue
pie or chocolate cake are tempting. In addition we are allowed
to take in healthy snacks for break
times.
We regularly celebrate special occasions where parents are
invited into the school. This might be for the Christmas or
the Summer Concert or Harvest Festival. We also have a Sports
Day every year where the parents can have refreshments while
watching us race and compete.
We also get the chance to attend workshops at school on really
interesting topics like Shakespeare or the Tudors. At a recent
Tudor workshop we got to dress up as Tudor ladies and we had a
school trip to Bramall Hall to learn even more about the
Tudors. Sometimes we have special days at school - like a
Language Day or an Ancient Greece Day. This year we had an Italian
Day and we ate Italian food, made Venetian masks, Italian flags,
learned some Italian words and constructed an Italian building made
from art straws.
From Year 4 onwards we have the opportunity to go to an outdoors
centre in the Lake District called Patterdale Hall. Activities
at Patterdale include: gorge-walking, canoeing, sailing,
orienteering and rock climbing. It's great fun and good to
spend a night or two with your friends. In Year 5 or Year 6
there is also the opportunity to go skiing in Italy for a
week. Everyone has a great time! You have ski lessons but
there is also time to go skido-ing and bum-boarding. There's
also a disco night and a karaoke night where you get to hear the
teachers sing. The hot chocolates are out of this world and
the ski instructors are very funny.
The Parents' Association at school is extremely active and they
put on treats at breakfast clubs some weeks as well as holding a
Christmas disco and help fund annual trips to the Pantomime or the
theatre.
Hesketh House is a great place to be and I am happy that I am part
of the Bolton School family.
