If you were an engineer, what would you do? This was the question posed to pupils from primary and secondary schools across the UK as they were asked to look at the world around them and find engineered solutions to common problems.

The Junior Boys’ Year 6 Challenge Group at Bolton School eagerly took on the challenge, submitting several entries. It was, however, Ziyad Bagasi who won out with his ‘Pram Power’ invention; a mechanism that would enable prams to move easily up and down stairs.

In correspondence with the School, event organisers, Leaders Award, said: ‘Thank you for all the hard work that went into running the project this year and I hope everyone enjoyed taking part! There were so many fantastic entries from your school that at the judging event, a winning entry was chosen from your school! There were two winners for each year group for the Greater Manchester region so Ziyad has done really well!’

Across the country, 32,000 children took part in the competition and Ziyad was chosen as a Year 6 winner from a plethora of entries from the Greater Manchester area. Before the end of Term, he attended an awards ceremony at Rochdale Town Hall where he received a trophy and certificate and where an exhibition showcased the Winner and Highly Commended entries for six days from 7th July.
