Young babies need reassurance, love and security so we provide lots of eye contact, cuddles and attention through one to one interaction between key workers and your child. We have sleeping facilities to cater for your child's individual needs. Hanging mobiles and brightly coloured displays offering visual stimulation. The older children have plenty of fun walking, talking and tumbling, climbing, running, painting, sticking, eating and - finally - sleeping!

The First Steps room is split up into 2 areas - the yellow side which are the crawlers and green side which are the walkers. Both rooms have lots of floor space for the children to explore and develop their gross motor skills. We also have an en-suite bathroom in which all hygiene relations take place such as nappy changing and hand washing.

Yellow Side - Crawlers

The little treasures on this side are quite young and will remain on this side until they are more confident and steady on their feet. The Team work closely with all parents, following all individual parent request and providing child routines which are in line with their homely routine. All nappies, wipes, milks and foods are included within the price and we like to use products that the parents and children are already using within the home life. By doing this we are indirectly supporting the child's and parent's transition into nursery life. Making life a whole lot simpler and easier. Babies can sleep indoors or outdoors in our prams, this is entirely the parents' choice. During the cold winter days the prams are heated up to provide the babies the opportunity to have a warm and relaxed sleep while getting the fresh air. When the children move over into the green side the children have the choice of also sleeping in the room on small specially designed sleep mats and this will then start to support transition from the cot to maybe their own little beds.

The rooms offers a wide variety of heuristic play giving the children to build up their experiences, senses and encourage them to make sense of the world around them.

Green Room - Walkers

The children in this room have become more confident and steady on their feet. This room provides all of the above in the yellow side as well as opportunities to encourage and build on:

  • Social Skills
  • Communication and Language
  • Signing as a support for communication
  • Lots of messy play
  • And plenty of opportunities to follow their own individual interests.

Due to our high ratios required by OFSTED which is 1 adult to every 3 children we have many opportunities to go out and explore our local environment such as going to the nearby Queen's Park to feed the ducks and our local garden centre. This helps to develop children's gross motor skills and opportunities to experience the world around them. By providing such extra curricular activities we are supporting many busy working parents as we appreciate that not all children may get to go outdoors on local outings and trips due to busy lifestyles. The children on this side are extremely fascinated in the world in which they live in and outdoor play is available on a reglar basis were children investigate bugs, living creatures and the variety of landscapes around them.

Sing & Sign

Bolton School Nursery is proud to say that we are a fully affiliated Sing and Sign Nursery. This is a great form of communication which is sometimes used by individuals who may find it difficult to communicate their needs, interests and views verbally.

Sing & Sign helps massively in First Steps in terms of children's communication. It eases children's frustration of not being able to fully communicate verbally as children are able to tell us what they require using the signs when they are unable to use the words.
