Bolton School to Celebrate 100 and 500 Year Anniversaries

Friday, 09 January 2015

Bolton School is busy preparing for its 100 and 500 Year Celebrations, which will run this year and next.

2015 marks the centenary of the Bolton School Foundation. In 1915, Lord Leverhulme brought together Bolton Grammar School for Boys and Bolton High School for Girls under one foundation sited on Chorley New Road, split into the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions that we know today.

In 1516, Bolton Grammar School for Boys was recorded as “a going concern”. This is the earliest known reference to the school which would ultimately form Bolton School Boys’ Division. It is also the first record of a school in Bolton, and one of the earliest in Lancashire. Consequently 2016 is the 500th anniversary of education in Bolton.

The school is planning a number of 100/500 Celebrations events both for alumni and for current staff and pupils.

The celebrations will begin in March with a School concert at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, which will be followed by a Centenary Dinner for former Captains and Head Girls of the School, a day of Sports Reunion Matches with a Celebration Dinner in July and a Grand Reunion Weekend in September. The Parents’ Associations are jointly organising a family fun day on the 28th of June. In June 2016, there will be an Anniversary Celebration Ball for the Friends of Bolton School. There will be a number of celebratory events for current pupils that run over the two year period including a programme of lectures open to the entire School community. Alumni of Bolton School have nominated their top ‘100 Objects’ which encapsulate their time at school, and these memories will be compiled into a digital ‘Memory Book’. A commemorative publication, The Best of Both Worlds, has also been commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Foundation and will be published in November 2015.

Since 2010, as part of the build-up to the 100/500 Celebration, the School has been commemorating a number of clubs and societies which have been active for a whole century. This has involved inviting back alumni such as Chess Grandmaster Nigel Short, royal photographer Ian Jones, and the Old Boltonians’ AFC to mark the various anniversaries. The Decade of Centenaries will continue until 2019.
