Nursery Raises over £1300 in Dragon Boat Race

Monday, 18 August 2014

The staff and families at Bolton School Nursery came together on Saturday to raise money for When You Wish Upon A Star. They took part in the Dragon Boat Challenge at Salford Quays, which is organised annually by the charity.

The funds raised will go towards sending a group of children with life-threatening illnesses from the Greater Manchester area to Lapland to meet Father Christmas.

This is the third year that the Nursery have taken on the Dragon Boat Challenge, racing under the team name ‘Abbie’s Heroes’ after the little girl who inspired them to take part in 2012. Abbie's Wish to visit Florida with her family was granted by the charity while she was battling cancer. She has since recovered, and gone on to inspire the Nursery team year after year.

The team gained a second link with the charity this year, as they were joined in the boat by Jamie Smith. This was the first year that he was able to take part in the competition, as he is just sixteen years old and only just above the lower age limit. When he was younger, his Wish - to visit Father Christmas in Lapland - was also granted by When You Wish Upon A Star!

With Abbie cheering them on from the waterside and Jamie rowing alongside them, the team had all the more incentive to do their best to raise money and help make children's dreams come true.

It was a particularly tough competition this year, with cold and windy conditions to battle against as well as the rival rowers. Nonetheless, the Nursery team did extremely well in their heats. In the first race they achieved third place with a time of 56.33 seconds and the second heat saw them come in second place with a time of 54.37s. Their best time of the day was in the third heat, where they pushed themselves further and came in first place with a time of 54.15 seconds!

“These times were faster than last year’s for us!” said Amanda Twigley, the Deputy Nursery Manager and one of the rowers. “Unfortunately we did not make it to the Semi-Finals this year, but there was some very tough competition to beat.”

The fastest time was achieved by the ‘Usain Boat’ team with just 47 seconds, but it was the ‘Ard Uns Crew’ who won overall.

Nonetheless, ‘Abbie’s Heroes’ should still be proud of their achievements in the heats – and with their fundraising. They have raised a fantastic £1313.90 for When You Wish Upon A Star, and the total is still rising!

They are hoping to reach their goal of £1500 in the next few days.
