This subject is a relative newcomer to the academic menu in the
Boys' Division, having first been taught here in 1991. Since then
the department has developed its academic and extra-curricular
provision so that it consistently outperforms national results
tables and it now has a high profile in various national
competitions. Overall, our success is most accurately measured by
the proportion of students who read management, business and
finance at university.
Pupils are expected to relate their acacemic understanding to
real business through printed and internet media. The department
subscribes to several source providers; http://www.bized.co.uk/ and www.tutor2u.net. Links to these
are made via our Sharepoint site, enabling pupils to answer
homework questions and to independently investigate the application
of theories they have learned. Current trends within the subject
area and up-to-the-minute examiner advice can be accessed, not just
from teacher input, but also from the department subscription to
'Business Review', a widely respected journal and from membership
of the EBEA. Our library stock has grown considerably since 1991
and is both entertaining and enlightening so that wider reading is
more accessible for our students.
The department also allows students to run their own business
via an award-winning simulation: SimVenture. Using this and
the theories they are taught, boys are encouraged to make real-time
decisions which they are then able to analyse and evaluate.
A further important aspect of studying within the department is
the opportunity that is offered to take part in business
competitions. Annually, the department takes part in the
national Ogden Trust competition, plays a key role in the
internal BEAT programme and encourages participation in
share-buying competitions: the IFS Student Investor and
Shares4Schools (regional winner 2007). The department has also
entered the national CIMA student competition (second in 2006 and
third in 2008).
