In years 8 to 10 hockey is introduced as an extra-curricular
school club in the Sports Hall. Practices run throughout the autumn
and summer terms. The basic skills are introduced and matches are
played in teams of five or six. Members of the school first team
assist the member of staff in charge with the organisation of the
session. This club has proved to be very popular with students.
We are developing our fixture list at U16 level. Our team
successfully reached the final of the Lancashire section of the
National Boys' schools' cup in 2008.
Pupils in years 11 to 13 may choose hockey as their winter
sports option. We offer these pupils the opportunity of
representing the school 1st XI in competitive fixtures
against other schools all over the North-West. Our home venue is
the Astroturf at Horwich Leisure centre which also doubles as the
training facility for our Wednesday sports lessons.
We offer around 18 competitive matches during the autumn and
spring terms largely on Wednesday afternoons. We encourage our
stronger players to further their skills by representing senior
teams on a Saturday afternoon at either Preston or Bolton Hockey
clubs with whom we have strong links.
