Each year the Parents’ Association considers requests from Boys’ Division staff for funding for items to enhance the experience of boys at Bolton School. A variety of bids were made for “nice but not necessary” items and these were considered by the PA in the autumn term. The following bids were successful and will now be purchased and put to good use:
Drama Department Mobile Lighting System
This will enable productions taking place at any venue in school to be professionally lit. With the number of drama productions in school growing each year, the Studio Theatre is unable to host all of these. Funding this lighting system will give pupils a wider scope of performance spaces, using the full school site, and also cut down substantially on production hire costs. It can be taken out to alternative venues providing enhancement to community-based projects in other schools. It will enhance other school events and can be lent to other creative applications within the curricular and extra-curricular programme e.g. photography.
Art Department Screen Printing Kit
Funding this initiative will give boys the opportunity to screen print using a professional table, with exposure kit and washout booth. It will not only be used to develop portfolios at GCSE and A level, but also in extra-curricular clubs and activities. It will also enable screen printing to be introduced at Lower School level.
Outdoor Pursuits Department Canoes
Outdoor Pursuits have received funding for a small fleet of open canoes. Last year kayaks were added to the school fleet and boys have benefitted hugely from this; many weekend canoe trips have taken place as well as their use during curriculum sport lessons. Pupils can currently take British Canoeing 1* and 3* awards, but these canoes will enable the 2* syllabus to be offered. It will also enable School to run its own Canoe Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions.
Roller Hockey Club
Roller Hockey Club is open to year 7 and 8 boys each week. Funding has been granted to allow the replacement of very old skates and enable boys who do not have their own skates to participate.
Bolton School Strictly Dance Club has bought a portable but super-loud new speaker with PA funding to use at Dance Club.
Music Department Recording Studio Equipment
Music Technology currently runs as a lunchtime activity and trains pupils to work as technicians on drama and music productions. The aim is to develop good recording facilities for use throughout the school, led by the Creative Arts Technician. To contribute to this ambitious project the PA has provided funding towards studio equipment, a digital mixing desk and recording software.
